Bio
Marcin Szczepanski is a multimedia producer for the University of Michigan. He creates documentary style films and photographs that are designed to enlighten, emancipate and educate.
Marcin was a staff video producer and photojournalist for the Detroit Free Press before joining the Communications and Marketing Department in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan in 2011.
Marcin's freelance multimedia work has appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, AARP and other publications.
In his work, Marcin uses multimedia tools such as video, photography and audio to document socio-economic issues of inequality, human rights, cultural identity and international development. Marcin’s work has received a number of awards throughout the years. In 2010, Marcin won three Regional Michigan Emmy Awards for his videos and was named NPPA Photographer of the Year in Michigan for both his photography and video work.
Educated as a sociologist and photographer, Marcin has traveled and worked in Brazil, China, Russia, Mongolia, Guatemala, Morocco and Europe in addition to the US. He was an intern at the legendary Magnum Photos Agency and worked as a reporter and city editor for the Polish Daily News in New York City. Marcin was born and raised in Poland before moving to the US in 2000.
At the Detroit Free Press and the University of Michigan, Marcin has worked on both long-term multimedia projects and short-form documentaries for web and TV. The long-term projects covered a wide range of issues, including: the impact of the economic crises on middle class Americans, social and artistic ramifications of Motown, the successes and challenges facing General Motors in China.
At the University of Michigan, Marcin shoots and edits video and photography that document and promote fascinating work of students and faculty at the Michigan Engineering, one of the top research and teaching institutions in the world. In 2011, Marcin traveled across the hinterlands of Guatemala with a group of bio-engineering students who were collecting data and field testing remote pediatric stethoscope in rural Guatemalan clinics. Marcin also flew to Australia to produce full-length documentary film on the participation of student-run U-M solar car team in the World Solar Challenge, five-day international race across the Outback of Australia.
On a daily basis, Marcin documents the dreams and struggles of the University of Michigan’s diverse population. He captures the intimate details of their lives and work and shows how they are connect to the larger global world. He also uses visual language to convey stories of exciting research, competitions, events and teaching that happen on the U-M North Campus.
Marcin Szczepanski currently lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan with his wife Sarah and daughter Olivia. When he is not working, he enjoys following the news, traveling overseas, gardening and fishing.
