The River Runs Deep
Juan Derby Sr. kisses his favorite daughter Katlynn, 5, goodbye before hopping into his boss' truck to got to work setting up bounce houses at kids parties nearby. Derby who is black and originally from Baltimore lives with a white partner. He moved to Monroe some 20 years ago, trying to escape Baltimore violence infected inner city. He now rents a house on the block that has become the epicenter of heroin epidemic in Monroe.
Monroe is a small town half way between Detroit, MI and Toledo, OH. Its biggest claim to fame is having the headquarters of the Lazy Boy Corporation. But Lazy Boy no longer manufactures furniture here. It imports it from China. Two paper mills and a number of car factories (including Ford) used to operate in the area. They are all gone now. Jobs that are still available in the area are low paying and mostly in the service industry.
