The River Runs Deep
Lexi, 3, the daughter of Joshua Henley and Kaemi Kirkpatrick gets ready for the night in the Oaks of Rightness one room homeless shelter in Monroe, MI. Women and children sleep on one side of a temporary division and men on the other side. The folded beds and seperation are removed every morning as the room doubles as a day room and cafeteria for dozens of people.
Joshua and Kaemi and their two daughters Lexi and Lucy (18 months) moved into the shelter couple months ago. They came from Ohio because Kaemi's kids from a previous relationship are in Michigan.
Monroe is a small town half way between Detroit, MI and Toledo, OH. Its biggest claim to fame is being the headquarters of Lazy Boy Corporation. Lazy Boy no longer manufactures furniture here. It imports it from China. Two paper mills and a number of car factories (including Ford) used to operate in the area. They are all gone now. Jobs that are still available in the area are low paying and mostly in the service industry.
